This is an lovely antique Victorian flat back portrait spill vase or mantle vase made in Germany for the in the 1880-1890s with a white and blue porcelain body with Art Nouveau molded leaves and a portrait of a young lady with a pert hat.

The shabby chic late Victorian era spill vase measures 7 inches high by 6.5 inches wide by 3.5 inches deep.

Spill vases were part of a mantle garniture and held tightly rolled pieces of paper used to light fires in the fireplace.  The flat back feature was because they stood against the wall.

They now make a wonderful Victorian flower vase and period accent for your tea table.

The Victorian spill vase is in very good used vintage condition with no chips or cracks, but it was at one time heavily gilded but almost all of the gold is worn off and only vestiges remain. There are also the usual mineral deposits and glazing flaws from this era of manufacturing.
