This is a Royal Watcombe Torquay, England mottoware, motto ware or Devon ware cup and saucer from the 1940-1950s.
The cup and saucer set is a traditional cottage design with the motto "A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss" and the city name Tiree.
The cup measures 2.75 inches high and the saucer is 5 inches in diameter. The cup and saucer is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. A wonderful set.
This famous and fun pottery has been manufactured in the south of England from the 1870s until the factories closed in the 1960s and is usually of red clay decorated with bright glazes with cottages, ships or birds and mottos or sayings that run the gamut from proverbs and sound advice to nearly outrageous. Always fun and different and very collectible!
