Antique Polychrome Transferware Cup And Saucer 1860s Blue White Gothic Joan Of Arc

European, Continental, vintage

SKU:
  • $ 6800

This is an early antique polychrome transfer or transferware cup and saucer in a fabulous blue and white gothic design with central black transfers dating 1860-1880.

The cup is 2.5 high by 3.5 inches in diameter and the saucer is 5.75 inches in diameter.

The soft porcelain cup and saucer set is unmarked but is Continental, not English in origin.

The design in the cup looks to be a Spanish nobleman and the lady in armor could be Joan of Arc, which would indicate French. I had a part dinner set in the pattern and this is the last of the set, because I was reluctant to let it go.

The designs on all the pieces had different transferware scenes, and after much research and asking many knowledgeable dealers, no one can pinpoint the maker, other than it is not English.

The cup and saucer is in very good ++ used vintage condition with no cracks, but a bit of rim chipping which happens with this type of material and age. This was actually the best of the 12 cups and saucers.

Because of it's age, which is well over 100 years,  it does have a few mineral impurities and the application of the transfers is not perfect.

But a wonderful survival and great decorative accent.
