Antique Staffordshire, England

This is an antique Aesthetic movement transferware sucrier, sugar box or sugar bowl with gold trim made 1879-1895 by Burroughs And Mountford, USA.

The sucrier or sugar box measures 5.5 inches high by 8 inches long by 5.5 square, has a ribbing and pink flowering tree blossoms and metallic gold trim.

The lidded box is from the victorian era when sugar was in large chunks, not the cubes or granulated form we are familiar with, and is made of ironstone.

The mark, which is lightly impressed underglaze, is extremely difficult to read, but is recognizable as the Burroughs and Mountford mark for those specific dates.

The ironstone sucrier is in very good +++ used vintage condition with only mild crazing and slight discoloration with no chips or cracks.

Sucriers are now used a tea caddies, small biscuit jars or candy jars and are very decorative.
