Description
This is a wonderful bit of victorian tea making history. This is a teapot spout tea leaves basket catcher that was popular in England in the 1870-1890s. The silver plated basket has a 2 pronged attachment that goes into the spout of the teapot and swivels to strain the tea that is being poured from the teapot into the cup through the star shaped holes at the bottom of the basket. Of course, before teabags. The basket measures 1 inch high by 2 inches in diameter and the prongs are 2 inches long. The teapot spout strainer basket didn't necessarily guarantee no drips on the tablecloth, just no tea leaves in the cup. The basket was made in England and these are rarely seen today. Trust the victorians to come up with a fun thing like this. The basket is in very good condition with a bit of corrosion in the bowl from the tannic acid of the tea been left in it too long. A fun tea item.
